Shaping lead edge of spur gears to ease sliding into mesh

I've searched for ideas on the easiest way to shape - chamfer or rounding - the edge of gears that need to slide into mesh when stationary - say in a lathe gearbox. All I found was a document about a patent for a machine, but no sign of such a machine. Any suggestions?
