This question raises even more interesting questions: for instance, what is the amount of profile shift? How would you calculate it based on sample span measurements?

There is an excellent website describing, among other things, how to calculate profile shift coefficient from span measurements.

Here is the index to their notes:

Douglas Wright's Notes on Involute and Profile Shift

Their publication of "notes" starts out in a basic way, and does a very good job of using graphics and examples. You can find the same info in books, but their figures and graphics are 2nd to none. The section on Gear Tooth Generation does an excellent job of explaining profile coefficient and how to apply it or measure it. Well worth the time and effort!
