Colin, standard spur 35T gear w/o shift and backlash would have span over 5 teeth of 2.755. You assumed 0.0054 backlash per member, so it's 2.7496 (assuming backlash is measured in tangent direction). Add 0.07 and you end up with 2.8196, which is 0.0001 away from yours. However, the original post did not mention anything about backlash. If you have had assumed slightly different backlash, the results would match exactly. Plus, as you stated yourself, your solution requires the profile shift of the 26T gear to be checked first. I believe my solution would work good enough even if the gears had been profile shifted. Because of all this I must disagree with your statement, that my solution was too approx.
