For the regular side fit, I would say no misalignment is allowed; for a coupling, where you will have misalignment, you might want to make a crowning of the external spline (tooth thickness, major dia and minor dia) and center on the major dia (major dia fit); the amount of misalignment will be kept to minimum possible.
