A very, very basic rule is that 'generally' you want to reduce the pitch in an effort to help reduce the length of the contact zone. This helps minimise heat generation at the point of meshing.
Reducing the pitch will also help in minimising the increase in vibration/noise as a result of the increasing rpm.
