I am very new to hobbing and have only cut spur gears so this may be a stupid solution. Why couldn't you make the first cut and then turn off the machine but leave the feed engaged. Then raise the work spindle high enough to clear the hob and then run the machine backwards with the feed engaged until it feeds back to where you could take another cut. I realize that this would take alot longer but maybe would be easier in the long run.
