BillS,

I assume this is about a spiral bevel gear cutting machine. Oerlikon has invented a method with multi start cutting heads, which makes a break-through improvement over the elder Fiat-Mammano method with a single start cutting head. The method was so good, that with only minor changes regarding crowning management and of course the carbide stick blade tools, it has become one of the fastest there is and is widely used, mainly for truck transmission gears, under the name of Face Hobbing.

There is a number of machines out there (the Oerlikon brand still exists and stands tall), if you give me the type of this old machine I can try to find some constants in the old books.
The calculation was pretty simple, could be done with a calculator, utilized constant tooth height.
